MONTICELLO, NY - The Seneca Nation plan to build a casino on Route 17 at Exit 107in Bridgeville, Sullivan County, New York. It will be two-million-square-feet facility with 6,000 slot machines, 120 game tables, 30 poker tables, a 1,500-room hotel and spa, 12 restaurants, upscale retail space, and a 5,000-seat arena.
Last month the Sullivan County Legislature unanimously approved a mitigation agreement with the tribe. It requires annual payments of $15.5 million to the County of Sullivan during the two-year construction phase of the hotel, and $20 million dollars for the four years after the hotel has been completed and gaming begins. There are also provisions for additional funding tied to the economic success of the casino.
County chairman Jonathan F. Rouis said, 'This agreement is the result of several productive meetings with the leadership of The Seneca Nation. We are appreciative that the Seneca leadership understood this legislature's commitment to be proactive in our efforts to mitigate any potential impacts of the project, and I believe that commitment is clearly reflected in this agreement.'
The casino will need the approval of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The department's previous secretary disapproved the proposed St. Regis Mohawk project in Monticello because the location was too far from the reservation. The new Secretary of Interior, Ken Salazar, has not yet announced his policy on off-reservation casinos.
Senator Chuck Schumer said April 26 that it is 'premature' to predict what Salazar will do about off-reservation casinos, but the senator broach Salazar on the issue.
